Message from the Chair

Executive MeredithPreparing our youngest Marylanders for success in school is one of the most powerful ways to diminish the achievement gap and nurture children who will flourish and contribute meaningfully to society. They are our future!

Ready At Five is a resource for early childhood education in Maryland, providing research- and data-driven solutions for educators, parents and communities.   We know that children who have access to high-quality early learning experiences are more likely to complete high school, graduate college, and become a valuable part of the workforce. National studies show that investments in early childhood education significantly reduce later expenses for remedial and corrective services. In Maryland, a state recognized for its leadership in the early childhood education arena, the return is at least $8 for every dollar invested.

I am honored to chair Ready At Five’s Executive Leadership Committee, and truly believe in the work that Ready At Five does to ensure that all of Maryland’s children are ready to be successful in school and in life. We must focus on developing the potential in every single child in order to make sure that our future workforce has the skills and capabilities we need. Ready At Five is at the forefront of these efforts in Maryland, as it provides trusted and quality leadership, programs, professional development, and resources for parents, educators and community members.

Partnering together, we can empower our families and educators to instill confidence and kindle a love of learning in all of our young children…

Sincerely,

Meredith Callanan

Voices from the Field

Ready At Five was thrilled to attend Secretary of Education Arne Duncan's Conversation hosted by Dr. Freeman Hrabowski at UMBC.  Secretary Duncan stressed the need for focusing on opportunities to continue strengthening education across the continuum, from early childhood through college. His clear message was the importance of and vision for a PreKindergarten to career pipeline that impacts policy, communities and states.  According to the Secretary, education should be about acceleration and enrichment not "catching-up".  Readiness for sucess is an issue.  We all need to focus on high quality education and higher achievement.
