RA5 Communities

You can improve the care and education of children, birth to five, and ultimately, increase the number of children who are "school ready."

RA5 Communities are doing amazing things! They are replicating the promising practices identified in the Learning Laboratories and the School Readiness Symposia.  They are holding School Readiness Fairs--providing early care and education providers and parents with information on how to promote the healthy growth and development of young children; often, child care is provided and licensed providers can receive continuing education credits. Elementary Schools are developing Sibling Lists to identify and contact future students. Communities are holding parent-led Learning Parties. Local public libraries and schools co-host Bedtime Story hours, "Parents in Print," "Read to Me," "The Language of Toys," and other programs to help parents promote language development in children birth to age 5. Kindergarten teachers are producing take-home videos for parents demonstrating how to take "picture walks" with their youngster. And, parents and caregivers are encouraged to use all available school readiness tools and resources through the lending libraries and "Make &Take" programs.
