Ready At Five's events - including the School Readiness Symposium series, professional development workshops and trainings - foster improved quality and the systemic change of Maryland's early care and education system.
There is a well-established correlation between the education and knowledge that early childhood development professionals receive and the quality of the services they provide. That is why Ready At Five puts so much energy into its School Readiness Symposia which feature national researchers discussing the latest scientifically based early childhood research for application in early childhood programs.
Our renowned School Readiness Symposia - offered 3 times a year - are a powerful way to provide professional development to early educators, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten teachers, policy makers, librarians, home visitors and other early childhood stakeholders to equip them with the knowledge, skills and resources to help young children to be ready to be successful in school.
On Thursday, December 11th, Dr. Caroline Owens will be the featured speaker at Ready At Five's third 2008 School Readiness Symposium. Dr. Owens' presentation, Nurturing Curiosity Right from the Start, will be held at the Columbia Hilton from 8:30 am to 12:15 pm.
A Science Education Specialist at the Capital Area Institute for Mathematics and Science, Penn State University, Dr. Owens will stimulate participants to learn how curious exploration promotes language development, how to use games and toys that stimulate inquiry; how scientific thinking can be used to satisfy curiosity, and how to encourage thinking scientifically even in infancy.
